JAKARTA - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese telephoned Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to convey his thanks for the approval of urea fertiliser exports from Indonesia to Australia.

The exports form part of a government-to-government (G2G) cooperation between Indonesia and Australia to strengthen food security in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Australian Prime Minister telephoned President Prabowo to express thanks because Indonesia has approved fertiliser exports to Australia,” said Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman in a statement from the Indonesian Presidential Staff Office on Friday (15/5/2026).

In the future, the export volume is targeted to increase to 500,000 tonnes with a value of around Rp 7 trillion.

“This creates history, because we will export fertiliser to several countries including Australia. Our plan to export to Australia, in line with discussions between the Australian Prime Minister and President, is 250,000 tonnes, but it will be increased to 500,000 tonnes, with a value of approximately Rp 7 trillion,” he stated.

He noted that the exports are being carried out because national production is in surplus, ensuring domestic needs remain secure.

Indonesia currently has a strong urea production capacity to meet national requirements while supporting export markets.

This year alone, national urea production is targeted at 7.8 million tonnes, while domestic needs are around 6.3 million tonnes, leaving a surplus of about 1.5 million tonnes.
