Australian PM Calls Prabowo: Expresses Gratitude for Urea Export
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, stated that the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, had called President Prabowo Subianto. During the call, Anthony Albanese expressed his gratitude for the approval of urea fertiliser exports from Indonesia to Australia.
This information was conveyed by Minister Amran during the launch of the first urea fertiliser export to Australia at the BSL Pier of PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur, Bontang, on Thursday (14/5/2026). This export is part of the Government-to-Government (G2G) cooperation between Indonesia and Australia in strengthening food security in the Asia-Pacific region.
Amran said that the direct communication between the Australian Prime Minister and Prabowo shows that Indonesia’s position is increasingly being taken into account in the global food supply chain, especially in the fertiliser sector.
“The Australian Prime Minister called Mr. President Prabowo to express his gratitude because Indonesia approved the export of fertiliser to Australia,” said Minister Amran in a statement on Friday (15/5/2026).
In addition, Amran explained that the initial export launched amounts to 47,250 tons and is the first stage of a cooperation commitment of 250,000 tons. In the future, the export volume is targeted to increase to 500,000 tons with a value of approximately IDR 7 trillion.
“This marks history, because we will export fertiliser to several countries including Australia. Our plan to export to Australia, as discussed between the Australian Prime Minister and Mr. President, is 250,000 tons, but it will be increased to 500,000 tons, with a value of approximately IDR 7 trillion,” explained Amran.
Furthermore, he affirmed that the government will continue to prioritise the fertiliser needs of farmers in the country. According to him, exports are carried out because national production is in surplus, so domestic needs remain safe.
Moreover, Indonesia currently has a strong urea production capacity to meet national needs while also supporting export markets. This year, national urea production is targeted to reach 7.8 million tons, while domestic needs are around 6.3 million tons, so there is still a surplus of around 1.5 million tons. For your information, the urea shipment to Australia is not just a trade activity, but part of Indonesia’s food diplomacy in the face of global challenges.
