Australian National Found Dead in Bali Immigration Detention Centre, Suspected Suicide

An Australian national with the initials CJMH, 39, was found dead in the detention room of the Ngurah Rai Class I Immigration Office in Jimbaran, Badung, on Friday evening. The man was discovered unconscious in a toilet with a towel tied around his neck. The tragic incident has raised serious questions about the supervision system within the detention centre. According to information gathered, the victim was found around 5:25 p.m. local time. Officers only realised something was amiss after the man failed to exit the toilet for several hours. Upon inspection, the Australian was found with a towel tied around his neck, which was secured to a tap at the bottom of the toilet. Officers provided first aid and called an ambulance, which arrived at the location around 6:00 p.m. Although he was rushed to Bali Jimbaran Hospital while still showing signs of life, CJMH could not be saved. He was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m. CCTV footage showed the victim entering the bathroom at approximately 4:52 p.m., indicating a gap of nearly half an hour before officers noticed the situation. An internal source mentioned an alleged lapse in monitoring the detention centre’s occupants. CJMH was known to be undergoing temporary placement proceedings prior to deportation for abusing his residence permit and overstaying. The psychological condition of detainees is now under serious scrutiny, given that lengthy administrative deportation processes and the pressures of detention can impact mental health. Ngurah Rai Immigration Office spokesperson Husnan stated that officers are still investigating the motive behind the incident. ‘Officers are still investigating the entire sequence of events, including other possible motives. A post-mortem examination is currently underway and we will release an official statement,’ Husnan said via text message. An initial medical examination found ligature marks on the victim’s neck and abrasions on his left hand, which were not deemed the cause of death. Furthermore, the victim was known to have a history of heart disease and a skin condition on both legs. The preliminary diagnosis following a medical evaluation, including an electrocardiogram (EKG), pointed towards a heart attack as a complication of these conditions. Police and immigration officials are conducting a crime scene investigation, interviewing witnesses, and securing evidence. The victim’s body has been transferred to Udayana University Hospital for further handling.
