Australian National Found Dead in Bali Immigration Detention Centre, Suspected Suicide
An Australian foreign national with the initials CJMH, aged 39, was found dead in the detention area of the Class I Special Immigration Office TPI Ngurah Rai in Jimbaran, Badung, on Friday evening (10 July 2026). The victim was discovered unconscious in a toilet with a towel wrapped around his neck.
The tragedy has raised serious questions about the supervision system in the detention area. Based on information gathered, the victim was found at around 17.25 local time. Officers only realised something was amiss after the victim had not emerged from the toilet for several hours. Upon inspection, the Australian man was found with a towel wound around his neck, tied to a tap at the lower part of the toilet.
Officers administered first aid and called an ambulance, which arrived at the scene at around 18.00. Although he was rushed to Bali Jimbaran Hospital still showing signs of life, CJMH could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at around 18.30.
CCTV footage shows the victim entered the bathroom at around 16.52, indicating a gap of nearly half an hour before officers became aware of the situation. Internal sources suggest there may have been negligence in the monitoring of detention inmates.
CJMH was reportedly undergoing temporary placement ahead of deportation due to misuse of his residence permit and overstay. The psychological condition of detainees has now come under serious scrutiny, given that lengthy deportation administrative processes and pressure during detention can take a toll on mental health.
Ngurah Rai Immigration Office spokesperson Husnan said authorities are still investigating the motive behind the incident. “Authorities are still looking into the entire sequence of events, including the possibility of other motives. A post-mortem examination is currently under way and we will release the results officially,” Husnan said via text message.
An initial medical examination found ligature marks on the victim’s neck and abrasions on his left hand, which were determined not to be the cause of death. The victim was also known to have a history of heart disease and a skin condition on both legs. The preliminary diagnosis following a medical evaluation, including an electrocardiogram (EKG), points to a suspected heart attack as a complication of his condition.
Police, together with immigration authorities, processed the crime scene, questioned witnesses and secured evidence. The victim’s body has been transferred to Udayana University Hospital for further handling.
As of the time of publication, the Head of the Immigration Information Section and spokesperson for the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Putu Astina Purwanti, had not yet given an official response regarding the incident befalling the Australian national.
