Australian Man Who Committed Suicide in Immigration Office Ran Illegal Workshop

Ngurah Rai Immigration has revealed the reason for the detention of Australian national Cameron Hughes (39) before he took his own life on Friday (10/7/2026). The man violated immigration regulations by misusing his residence permit and overstaying by 98 days. “The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office received a public report regarding a foreign national conducting activities inconsistent with his residence permit,” stated Head of Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugie Kurniawan, during a press conference at Denpasar Police Headquarters on Thursday (16/7/2026). Cameron was reported by his ex-wife, an Indonesian citizen with the initials NKIY, for immigration violations. His residence permit had expired on 4 April 2026. Following up on the report, Immigration officers visited the address of a workshop owned by the individual in Jimbaran, Badung Regency. However, as they were unable to meet him, Immigration sent a summons for clarification on 15 April 2026. Cameron visited the Immigration Office on 17 April 2026, and the examination results showed he had overstayed and was managing a workshop called HRB without a proper permit. “The examination results showed that the individual was involved in the operations and management of HRB without a suitable residence permit,” Bugie added. Subsequently, Immigration periodically requested the individual to come to the office to process his deportation documents. However, after being summoned five times up until 30 June 2026, he failed to comply with the invitations. He eventually came on 2 July 2026 to arrange his flight schedule but fled mid-discussion without notice. After several further requests to return to the office were ignored, Immigration officers picked him up at his residence on 10 July 2026. He was detained on the same day, which was the day he later ended his life. Cameron took his own life by tying a towel around his neck in the detention room bathroom. When checked by officers, he was still breathing and was rushed to Jimbaran General Hospital. However, upon arrival at the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
