Australia to export uranium to India

Australia will export uranium to India for nuclear energy under an agreement signed on Thursday by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Narendra Modi. Albanese said in a statement that he and Modi signed a deal allowing uranium exports for peaceful purposes under an existing nuclear cooperation agreement when they met in Melbourne for the third annual Australia-India Summit. Speaking to reporters alongside Modi after the meeting, Albanese said the relationship between Australia and India has never been stronger. “We have a shared focus on deepening and diversifying the relationship between our countries so that we can continue to grow stronger together,” he said. Modi, who arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday evening local time for a three-day official visit, said the important nuclear energy agreement would provide new momentum for India’s clean energy goals. In addition to the uranium deal, the two leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation in security and culture.
