Australia Reports First Fatal H5 Bird Flu Case

The Australian government confirmed the country’s first fatal case of the H5 bird flu strain on Saturday, according to media reports. The H5 avian influenza was detected in a migratory bird stranded on a remote beach in Western Australia, approximately 700 kilometres southeast of Perth, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported, citing Agriculture Minister Julie Collins. A brown skua, a wild sub-Antarctic seabird potentially infected with the disease, was discovered in Western Australia on 14 June. Australia is the only continent that had been spared from the H5 bird flu strain, which has wreaked havoc on animal populations worldwide. Collins stated that extensive efforts are underway to protect the poultry industry from the potential spread of the virus, relying on existing protocols and training. Australia has previously experienced bird flu outbreaks in poultry, but historically these involved other strains, particularly the H7 virus, rather than the globally dominant H5N1 strain. Commonly known as bird flu, avian influenza is a contagious virus that primarily affects bird species and can infect other animal populations, including humans. The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza was discovered more than 20 years ago.
