Australia Allocates Additional Funding to Reduce Visa Processing Times

The Australian government is working to reduce visa processing wait times through the allocation of additional funding in its latest budget, according to Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Matt Thistlethwaite. Speaking at a public discussion in Jakarta on Tuesday, Thistlethwaite explained that the government had announced extra funding to address the waiting period applicants face before receiving a visa decision. He noted that the number of visa quotas is determined by annual planning that balances supply and demand, with the government also bearing the budgetary costs of facilities accessed by visa holders, such as healthcare, education, transport, and infrastructure. The push to accelerate processing comes after Australia downgraded Indonesia’s student visa assessment level from Level 1 to Level 2 on 27 March. This reclassification to a medium-risk category requires Indonesian applicants to submit more detailed financial documents and stricter English language proficiency test results, necessitating a more thorough assessment by immigration authorities.
