Aussie rules tourney canceled in Bali

DENPASAR: The organizers of an Australian rules football tournament staged annually in Bali said on Thursday this year's event had been canceled in the wake of last weekend's bombings.

Bali Nines tournament organizer Peter Muir said teams from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Jakarta had pulled out of the competition scheduled for this Saturday following the bombings in Jimbaran and Kuta.

"We're all very disappointed," Muir told Australian national news service AAP. "About half the guys still wanted to come, and I personally wanted it to go ahead. But at the end of the day you need teams to compete."

The teams of expatriate Australians were to have had lineups featuring the Jakarta Bintangs, Malaysian Warriors and Singapore Wombats. -- AFP
