August 2026 Calendar: Long Weekend and Two National Holidays Mark Indonesia's 81st Independence Day

August is synonymous with the celebration of the Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day. In 2026, the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence falls on Monday, 17 August 2026.

In addition to the independence commemoration, a number of national and international observances are also marked throughout August 2026. These observances cover various issues, ranging from technology, youth, and humanitarian affairs to the environment and world peace.

Based on the government’s decree regarding national holidays and collective leave for 2026, there are two national holidays in August 2026. The first is Monday, 17 August 2026, commemorated as the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. No collective leave days have been designated for August 2026.

Consequently, the public can enjoy a long weekend adjacent to this public holiday. The long weekend consists of Saturday, 15 August 2026, Sunday, 16 August 2026, and Monday, 17 August 2026. Additionally, the national holiday for the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday falls on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.

Beyond the national holidays, several national commemorations take place throughout August 2026. These include Dharma Wanita Nasional Day on 5 August, National Veterans Day and National Technology Awakening Day on 10 August, Praja Muda Karana (Scout) Day on 14 August, Constitution Day on 18 August, Indonesian Foreign Ministry Day on 19 August, and National Maritime Day on 21 August.

International observances in August 2026 include World Lung Cancer Day and World Wide Web Day on 1 August, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August, International Youth Day and World Elephant Day on 12 August, World Humanitarian Day, International Orangutan Day, and World Photo Day on 19 August, and International Day against Nuclear Tests on 29 August.
