Attorney General's Office Must Re-examine All Detainees Handled by Karo District Prosecutor's Office
Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, has called on the Attorney General’s Office not to focus solely on the case of videographer Amsal Sitepu but also to check other detainees handled by the Karo District Prosecutor’s Office in North Sumatra. According to Sahroni, the internal examination currently being conducted by the Attorney General’s Office needs to be expanded to ensure there are no similar issues in the handling of other cases.
He revealed that Commission III of the House of Representatives had previously raised the possibility of similar cases during a meeting with officials from the Karo District Prosecutor’s Office.
“As conveyed by Mr Hinca Panjaitan, there are suspicions of other cases with the same pattern. This needs to be investigated further by the Attorney General’s Office,” he said at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta.
Sahroni also appreciated the swift action by the Attorney General’s Office in responding to the controversy by examining the ranks of the Karo District Prosecutor’s Office. He assessed that supervision of law enforcement officials must be carried out comprehensively to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
“Supervision must be strengthened so that cases like this do not happen again in the future,” he stated.
Previously, the Attorney General’s Office had examined the ranks of the Karo District Prosecutor’s Office regarding the handling of the Amsal Sitepu case. The examination was conducted through clarification and examination processes against several prosecutorial officials.
Head of the Public Relations Centre for Law of the Attorney General’s Office, Anang Supriatna, stated that several officials examined included the Head of the Karo District Prosecutor’s Office, Danke Rajagukguk, the Head of the Special Crimes Section, and the public prosecutors handling the case.
“On Saturday night, they were secured by the Attorney General’s Office intelligence team for examination,” he said.
He added that the Attorney General’s Office team would delve into the process of handling the case, including aspects of the prosecutors’ professionalism in carrying out their duties. This step is expected to ensure that law enforcement runs according to procedure while maintaining public trust in the prosecutorial institution.
This action was taken following the controversy over the handling of the videographer Amsal Sitepu case, which has drawn sharp scrutiny, including from Commission III of the House of Representatives.
Member of Commission III of the House of Representatives, Rudianto Lallo, questioned the fate and justice regarding the case of Amsal Christy Sitepu, who had been detained for 131 days before finally being acquitted.
