Attorney General's Office Has No Objection to Ibam's Appeal of 4-Year Prison Sentence: Defendant's Right
Former Information Technology Consultant for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, will appeal the four-year prison sentence in the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM). The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) stated it has no objection to Ibam’s legal efforts.
“Yes, please proceed, as it is indeed the defendant’s right,” said Director of Public Prosecution Supervision at the AGO, Ardito Muwardi, to reporters at the AGO Office in South Jakarta on Wednesday (13/4/2026).
Ardito said that prosecutors would subsequently study what Ibam intends to challenge. They are currently awaiting the appeal filing.
“But of course, we are still waiting; we will review it again and consider our stance,” he added.
The sentence for Ibam is lower than the 15-year prison term demanded by prosecutors. Ardito said this would be re-examined by the prosecutors.
“Well, since the verdict was just handed down yesterday, we are still discussing it and studying it to determine how we will respond,” he explained.
Ibam to Appeal
Previously, former Ministry of Education Information Technology Consultant Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam was sentenced to four years in prison in the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM). Ibam is dissatisfied with the verdict and will challenge it via appeal.
“We firmly state that the legal team will file an appeal within the seven-day period as stipulated by the applicable criminal procedure law in Indonesia. We are pursuing this to fight for true justice for our client,” said Ibam’s lawyer, Arfian Bondjol, during a press conference in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (13/4/2026).
Arfian said his side still respects the legal process. However, he expressed disappointment and concern over the decision.
Arfian appreciated the differing opinions or dissenting opinions from two judges. According to him, those two judges provided a comprehensive assessment.
“Once again, we extend our highest appreciation to member judge Andi Saputra and member judge Eryusman. The dissenting opinion was read by judge Andi Saputra and was compiled based on three very comprehensive clusters of analysis,” he stated.
Arfian also intends to request a re-examination of witnesses. He asked for certain witnesses to be re-examined at the Jakarta High Court.
Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison
Previously, Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam was sentenced to four years in prison. The judge declared Ibam guilty in the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM).
“Declares the Defendant Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing the criminal act of corruption jointly as charged in the subsidiary indictment,” said the chief judge of the panel, Purwanto S Abdullah, when reading the verdict at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday (12/5).
“Imposes a prison sentence on the Defendant Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam of four years,” added the judge.
Ibam was also fined Rp 500 million. If the fine is not paid, it will be replaced with 120 days of imprisonment.
This verdict is far lower than the prosecutors’ demand. Previously, Ibam was demanded 15 years in prison, a fine of Rp 1 billion subsidiary 190 days of imprisonment. Prosecutors also demanded Ibam pay restitution of Rp 16.92 billion subsidiary 7 years and 6 months in prison.
