Attorney General's Office Fits Detection Bracelet to Nadiem, Now Under House Arrest
The Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) has shifted the detention status of former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim from prison detention to house arrest. This change in status was made based on a determination by the panel of judges at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court.
Head of Public Relations and Advocacy at Kejagung, Anang Supriatna, stated that the prosecution team had executed the determination on Monday night (11/5). Anang said that Nadiem’s movements remain monitored.
“Last night, the prosecution team implemented the panel of judges’ determination, whereby Mr NM’s status was shifted to house arrest,” said Anang at the Kejagung complex in South Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
Anang said that they would conduct strict supervision of Nadiem. Nadiem, he said, cannot leave the house without permission from the panel of judges and the prosecution.
Prosecutors also apply the standard operating procedure (SOP) for electronic monitoring. Anang mentioned that Nadiem has also been fitted with a special detection bracelet.
“Yes, it should be (the bracelet fitted), to my knowledge, there’s an SOP that’s usually used. But I’ll confirm it later. But the standard with us is like that to implement (house arrest),” explained Anang.
“It’s the same for everyone, the important thing is that when a detainee is placed under house arrest, they’re usually fitted with a bracelet,” he added.
In addition to digital technology, prosecutors are coordinating with authorities to guard Nadiem’s residence.
“He cannot leave the house without permission from the Panel of Judges and the Prosecution. There must be permission. We are also working with security apparatus (police),” said Anang.
The panel of judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court granted the request to shift the detention of former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim from prison detention to house arrest. The shift in Nadiem’s detention takes effect tomorrow.
The granting of the request to shift Nadiem’s detention was read directly by the chief judge of the panel, Purwanto S Abdullah, during a hearing held at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday (11/5).
“It is determined: first, to grant the request of the Defendant’s Legal Counsel to shift the type of detention of the Defendant. Second, to shift the type of detention of the Defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim from detention at the Salemba State Detention Centre Branch of the Central Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office to house detention at the Defendant’s residence located at The Residence at Dharmawangsa 2 Unit 1908 RT/RW 01/02, Pulo Village, Kebayoran Baru Subdistrict, South Jakarta City, effective from 12 May 2026,” stated Purwanto when reading the decision granting the request to shift Nadiem’s detention.
Although granting the request, the judge also explained matters that must be complied with by Nadiem as conditions for house arrest. The judge explained that if Nadiem violates one or more of the stipulated conditions, the type of detention will be shifted back to State Detention Centre detention.
“I just want to express alhamdulillah, my gratitude to Allah, and I want to thank the panel for their humanity in granting the shift in status to house arrest,” said Nadiem.
