Attorney General's Office Discusses Possibility of In Absentia Trial for Jurist Tan in Chromebook Case
The Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) is open to pursuing an in absentia trial, or one without the presence of the defendant, against suspect Jurist Tan in the case of alleged corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology from 2019 to 2022. “If there is an opportunity, all those without the suspect present can proceed; there is a possibility,” said Director of Investigation at the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes of Kejagung, Syarief Sulaeman Nahdi, when met at the Kejagung RI Building in South Jakarta on Wednesday (13/5/2026). “But we will calculate first; we will maximise our efforts first,” he added. Syarief also assessed that Jurist Tan’s failure to appear will not impede the handling of the Chromebook case, which is currently progressing. “It’s not a problem,” he said briefly. “Regarding Jurist Tan, the investigating team at the bundar building has already taken action and maximised efforts to bring her in, where she has been summoned as a witness three times, designated as a suspect, and a DPO (Wanted Persons List) has been issued,” said Anang on Monday (10/11/2025). In addition, Kejagung has requested the issuance of a red notice through the National Central Bureau (NCB) Interpol Indonesia and is now awaiting a decision from Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France. “We have requested the issuance of a Red Notice to the NCB and it has been forwarded by the NCB to Interpol in Lyon, France. We are waiting for the results from Interpol headquarters in France,” he stated.
