Attorney General Tells Police Chief: Don't Think of Us as Rivals
Attorney General ST Burhanuddin has stressed that there is no rivalry between his office and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), following recent public attention on a corruption case involving a former senior prosecutor. Burhanuddin welcomed the visit of National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, stating that such meetings are a regular occurrence. “Alhamdulillah, I received a visit from my friends at the police force. Don’t think of us as rivals or versus each other, no. We have known each other personally for a long time, since before I became Attorney General and he became National Police Chief,” Burhanuddin said. He emphasised that inter-agency meetings are normal and necessary for improving Indonesia’s legal system. “This synergy is needed because, for a prosecutor, a good investigation will result in a good prosecution. A good prosecution will result in a good verdict. It is our duty and obligation to synergise,” he added. National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that his visit aimed to maintain synergy and collaboration between the two law enforcement institutions. “This is what the public expects, so that legal services can truly be provided to those in need, both in terms of legal certainty and justice,” Sigit said after the meeting. He noted that the meeting also covered strengthening law enforcement, including the socialisation of the new Criminal Code (KUHP) and Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP). “Going forward, the existing partnership and synergy will continue to be strengthened and improved,” he explained. Sigit also mentioned that both institutions would carry out joint educational programmes for prosecutors and police investigators. He expressed hope that every step of coordination, particularly within the criminal justice system, would lead to better outcomes. “All of this is done to continue providing a sense of justice for the public who need legal services,” he said.
