Attorney General Proposes Merging Special and General Crimes Units into Single Operations Deputy
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Attorney General ST Burhanuddin has floated the idea of merging the functions of special crimes and general crimes within the Attorney General’s Office into a single Jaksa Agung Muda Operasi (JAM Operasi).
Speaking at a national seminar reflecting on six months of implementing the Criminal Code (KUHP) and the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) in Jakarta on Wednesday, Burhanuddin initially discussed the application of the new KUHP and KUHAP within the prosecution service. During his explanation, he referred several times to the general crimes division (pidum) and its implementation of alternative case resolution mechanisms as stipulated in the KUHAP.
He then revealed that ideally, the general crimes and special crimes divisions should be merged. According to him, the separation of these two functions is less effective in terms of implementing regulations.
“Ideally for us, it should be a single Jaksa Agung Muda Operasi, under which there would be general crimes and special crimes, so that the standard rules we create are not separated as they are now,” he stated.
With the merger into a JAM Operasi, he assessed that there would be harmonisation of implementing regulations, which are currently separate between the general and special crimes divisions.
However, the head of the Adhyaksa Corps emphasised that this proposal is still a discourse. He expressed hope for further input in future discussions.
Nevertheless, he said the idea represents an adaptive step by the Attorney General’s Office to support the refinement of the implementation of the KUHP and KUHAP.
“So that in implementation, we hope it will be easier, more effective, and especially cheaper, without the lengthy separation between general and special crimes,” he said.
