Attorney General Denies Rivalry with Police After Graft Case Targets Former Jampidsus
Attorney General ST Burhanuddin has stressed that the relationship between the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) remains solid, despite the recent naming of a former senior prosecutor as a corruption suspect. The statement was made after receiving a visit from Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and senior police officials at the Attorney General’s Office in Jakarta on Monday. Burhanuddin described the meeting as a long-standing tradition aimed at maintaining cooperation and strengthening synergy between the two law enforcement institutions. “Alhamdulillah, I received a visit from my friends in the police. This is not a new programme, it is an old one,” he said following the meeting. He rejected any notion of rivalry or a rift between the two bodies, even though the visit took place after the revelation of a corruption and money laundering case that named Febrie Adriansyah, the former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus), as a suspect. “Do not think that we are rivals or versus each other, no. We have known each other personally for a long time, since I became Attorney General and he became Police Chief,” Burhanuddin stated. He reiterated that the gathering was a routine agenda to discuss strengthening coordination and improving inter-agency cooperation for the future. Previously, the Police’s Corruption Eradication Corps (Kortastipidkor) decided to transfer the handling of the case involving Febrie Adriansyah to the Attorney General’s Office. The case transfer was described as a result of an agreement between the two institutions to reinforce synergy in law enforcement. Febrie Adriansyah and a private sector individual, Don Ritto, have been named suspects in the alleged corruption and money laundering case.
