Attack on lawyer probed

JAKARTA (JP): Police have started investigating an assault on
Andi Hakim, lawyer of the second wife of the late Nyo Beng Seng,
an entertainment businessman brutally murdered in April last
year.

"I have ordered city police to start investigations and to
find the motive behind the attack, without waiting for a report
from the victim," Deputy to National Police Chief Maj. Gen.
Koesparmono Irsan said yesterday.

Andi Hakim, 40, was attacked on Sunday afternoon by four
unidentified men, who asked the lawyer to hand over his Rolex
wristwatch and glasses.

He received at least 14 wounds and is now being treated at
Husada hospital.

The suspects, riding on two motorcycles, left the scene of the
crime immediately after Andi screamed for help.

Andi is the lawyer for Tuti, whose husband Beng Seng, alias
Darmansyah Suyadi, 57, was killed in front of her mansion at Jl.
Pluit Kencana Raya 128, North Jakarta, on April 15 last year by
at least four masked men.

Police found a total of 12 stab wounds in his body, including
his chest, arms and thigh.

The four suspects as well as three other people believed to be
involved in the killing have been arrested. But police are still
looking for the man behind the crime, who is believed to have
hired the murderers.

According to Andi, he, together with his wife and their three
children were looking at a building on Jl. Pekojan Barat 30,
Tambora, West Jakarta, which Andi planned to use for his new
office.

As they got out of the family's BMW sedan, the four
unidentified assailants suddenly came by and pointed their
weapons at the lawyer.

Andi said that the attack is the second in the past two weeks.

The first attack took place in front of his office on Jl.
Kartini Raya, Central Jakarta, in which he was also mobbed by
four unidentified people.

At that time, he was not injured as he was able to fight back
with the help of two of his employees.

A detective at the West Jakarta police precinct, which handled
the case, strongly believes that the suspects, who are still at
large, wanted to kill the lawyer.

"If they just wanted to steal his belongings, why didn't they
take them and leave?," he asked.

Police strongly believe the attack was made in connection with
the death of Beng Seng. (bsr)
