Previously, a joint US-Israel attack killed the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Leadership Council, Ali Larijani. Ross Harrison, a senior researcher at the Middle East Institute, assesses Israel’s attack on Iran’s gas and oil field as part of a “political agenda” to close off negotiation channels. Quoted from Al Jazeera’s website, Harrison highlights that this attack, alongside assassination attempts on key figures like Ali Larijani, is deliberately designed to eliminate the possibility of dialogue. “The attack on oil installations and gas fields escalates the ladder of tension, and in many ways, traps the United States,” Harrison stated. Washington is now in a difficult position to handle various emerging adverse possibilities. Harrison notes that with the destruction of major energy infrastructure, the room for diplomatic manoeuvre has become extremely narrow. The world now faces uncertainty regarding how far this war will spread, while its environmental impacts are beginning to be felt collectively by the Earth’s inhabitants. The destruction of Qatar’s gas field, as the world’s second-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), is also predicted to worsen the global energy crisis and slow down the green energy transition in various parts of the world.
