Atomic energy a miracle cure: Hatta

JAKARTA: State Minister of Research and Technology Hatta Radjasa was named the president for the 46th General Conference of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, which began on Monday.

In his opening speech, Hatta proposed that the conference discuss the use of nuclear technology for the general public's welfare.

Given its status as an independent institution under the auspices of the UN, IAEA could play a leading role in nuclear promotion and protection and provide technical assistance for developing countries to conduct research, improve health, secure food and fulfill demands for energy, Hatta said.

Experience had taught of the benefits of nuclear energy in helping the international community create sustainable development, which in turn could eradicate poverty and certain elements in society who follow an ideology related to radicalism and activities that lead to terrorism, Hatta claimed.

During the five-day conference, ministers and senior officials from 134 countries will also discuss safeguard systems for nuclear and other radioactive substances, implementation of the security cooperation agreement with North Korea and implementation of the UN resolution on Iraq. -- JP
