Atalia Praratya Questions Public Apathy: How Could a Confinement in a Densely Populated Area Last Three Years?

The case of confinement and physical abuse suffered by a woman, identified by the initials YTR (29), has drawn significant public attention. The victim was held captive by her partner, identified as TH, for three years before being discovered in critical condition in a boarding house in the Cileunyi area, Bandung Regency, West Java.

YTR, a resident of Rancaekek, Bandung Regency, sustained serious injuries across her entire body. It is suspected that the victim suffered physical abuse including punching, hacking, and torture at the hands of the perpetrator.

As a result, the victim suffered severe infections in her head, loss of vision, and a body covered in burns and deep stab wounds. Unfortunately, the perpetrator, TH, fled the scene, and the police are currently conducting a manhunt.

This case has become a matter of public concern, with Atalia Pruscya, a member of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) from the Golkar Party faction, among those highlighting the incident. Atalia Praratya expressed deep sorrow and anger regarding the case and has personally visited the victim in the hospital.

She witnessed the victim’s condition, noting the devastating physical impact of the abuse. However, the mother of two expressed bewilderment and questioned the level of community concern, wondering how such confinement could persist for three years within a densely populated residential area.

“How is it possible that such a heinous confinement could last for three years in the middle of a densely populated area? And in a boarding house area at that,” stated Atalia Praratya.

She lamented the lack of social sensitivity in the surrounding environment, noting that suspicious signs were clearly evident. “I deeply regret the lack of social awareness in the neighbourhood. Boarding house neighbours often heard loud impacts from inside the room. The boarding house warden also saw the victim being supported while in a weak condition since March 2024, and the door was always locked from the outside,” Atalia explained.

“Were such glaring signs of abnormality simply ignored? Our indifference provides a comfortable space for criminals. Has the function of social policing died?” she continued.

Atalia issued a stern warning to the public not to remain indifferent when someone is experiencing abuse.
