Atalia Praratya Proposes Library Revamp to Support Gen Z Literacy

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Atalia Praratya has proposed revamping libraries to support Generation Z’s interest in literacy. “Libraries can be transformed into free coworking spaces, community rooms, public discussion spaces, simple podcast studios, and even video editing rooms,” Atalia said in a confirmed statement in Jakarta on Tuesday. Additionally, Atalia suggested that libraries across Indonesia could utilise platforms frequently used by Gen Z, such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. For instance, she said, libraries could expand their collections to include podcasts, educational videos, e-books, journals, infographics, or newsletters. “So, the image we want to build is of the library as a space for exploring ideas,” she said. She put forward these proposals in line with findings from the Jakpat survey agency, which showed that Gen Z is the most active reading generation. Meanwhile, millennials, or those born between 1981 and 1996, ranked second, with 20 percent showing an interest in literacy. “Gen Z is a generation that grew up with the internet and technology. They adapt quickly, access information instantly, are critical of social issues, and possess independent, creative, and collaborative characteristics in learning and creating,” she said.
