Atalia Praratya Proposes Library Revamp to Support Gen Z Literacy

The vision is to build an image of the library as a space for exploring ideas.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of the MPR RI, Atalia Pruscaya Praratya, has proposed the improvement of libraries to support the interest of Generation Z (Gen Z) in literacy.

“Libraries could be transformed into free coworking spaces, community spaces, public discussion rooms, simple podcast studios, and even video editing rooms,” Atalia stated in a briefing confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Furthermore, Atalia suggested that libraries across various regions in Indonesia could utilise platforms frequently used by Gen Z, such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.

For instance, she noted that libraries could expand their collections to include podcasts, educational videos, e-books, journals, infographics, or newsletters.

“The image we want to build is that of the library as a space for the exploration of ideas,” she said.

She proposed these measures following findings from the Jakpat survey agency, which indicate that Gen Z is the most active generation in reading. Meanwhile, Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) hold the second position, with 20 per cent showing an interest in literacy.

“Gen Z is a generation that has grown up alongside the internet and technology. They adapt quickly, access information instantly, are critical of social issues, and possess independent, creative, and collaborative characters in both learning and creating,” she added.
