At UN Human Rights Council, Indonesia Reaffirms Commitment to Ending Global Conflicts
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to playing an active role in addressing conflicts and humanitarian crises worldwide, including through its unwavering support for Palestinian independence and conflict resolution in Myanmar.
In his statement at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, Sugiono expressed Indonesia’s deep concern over conflicts and humanitarian crises occurring across the globe, particularly in Palestine.
“Regarding Palestine, Indonesia reaffirms its steadfast support for their inalienable human rights,” the Foreign Minister said, as monitored via the UN Web TV live broadcast from Jakarta.
He urged an end to all forms of violence in Palestine and called for full, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to be realised immediately. Indonesia also supports the achievement of a just and lasting peace in Palestine based on the internationally agreed two-state solution.
Furthermore, the Foreign Minister reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment at the ASEAN level to continue pushing for the effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as the basis for ending the conflict in Myanmar.
Sugiono also conveyed Indonesia’s determination to strengthen the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) as a mechanism for the protection and promotion of human rights in the Southeast Asian region.
While expressing concern over conflicts and humanitarian crises, he noted that such challenges require good-faith dialogue and constructive approaches grounded in objectivity.
“Upholding international humanitarian law is our collective obligation,” Sugiono said.
He emphasised that sustainable solutions to end conflicts cannot be imposed but must be built through trust and mutual respect.
The 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council is the first to be presided over by Indonesia, through Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, since the body was established in 2006. The session will run from 23 February to 31 March 2026.
Throughout Indonesia’s presidency of the UN Human Rights Council, thematic issues to be raised include the prevention of female genital mutilation, the promotion of a culture of peace, sustainable development financing, the rights of persons with disabilities, and children’s rights.
