Jakarta – A medical specialist from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Faraby Martha, testified during the trial of the acid-attack case at Military Court II-08 Jakarta that Andrie Yunus, activist of KontraS, has permanent damage to his right eye as a result of the alleged acid attack carried out by four soldiers of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). The hearing took place on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

The four accused are Sergeant Second Class Edi Sudarko, First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetyo, and First Lieutenant Sami Lakka.

In court, the military prosecutor asked about the severity of the eye injuries. ‘I cannot correlate the event to the severity, but the severity is grade 3 of 4. So the chemical eye trauma is grade 3 out of 4. In other words, serious,’ Faraby said.

Faraby explained that grade 4 represents the most severe level of chemical eye trauma. The prosecutor then asked whether the eye injury is temporary or permanent. ‘Permanent,’ Faraby replied.

Nevertheless, Faraby said the medical team continues treatment and cannot yet determine whether Andrie Yunus’s vision can return to normal. ‘Thus, the current focus of treatment is to preserve the anatomy of the eyeball, so the eyeball remains round. Regarding function, we cannot answer yet whether he will still be able to see. This will be evaluated periodically according to the patient’s clinical progress,’ he added.

Earlier, the military prosecutor charged the four TNI soldiers with pouring acid on Andrie Yunus because they were angered by his activities. The indictment stated that the defendants first learned of Andrie Yunus after the KontraS activist interrupted a meeting on the revision of the TNI Law at the Fairmont Hotel, South Jakarta, on 16 March 2025. ‘With that incident, the defendants regarded Andrie Yunus as having insulted the TNI, even trampling the TNI’s institutions,’ the prosecutor read.

The defendants then sought information about Andrie’s activities and divided tasks before carrying out the acid-attack. For this offense, the four defendants are charged under Article 469(1) in conjunction with Article 468(1), and in conjunction with Article 467(1) in combination with Article 20 letter C of Law Number 1 of 2023 regarding the KUHP.

The trial of the KontraS activist Andrie Yunus acid-attack case saw two expert doctors appear before the Military Court Jakarta prior to the indictment being read against the four TNI members. The four soldiers faced arraignment today at Military Court II-08 Jakarta, on Wednesday 20 May.

Executive Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, criticised the military justice process in the acid-attack case against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. The Judicial Council (KY) opened the door to follow up alleged violations of a judge’s ethics in the trial.

Defendant Serda Edi Sudarko said the acid-attack on Andrie Yunus was triggered by the victim’s behaviour which was deemed overacting during the RUU TNI meeting interruption.
