REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW DELHI – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono attended the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, India, on Thursday (14/5/2026). On that occasion, he remembered four TNI soldiers who fell while carrying out the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon. In his speech, Sugiono touched on developments in the Middle East. Quoting a statement by President Prabowo Subianto during his attendance at the recent ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, Sugiono said that the current situation in the Middle East demonstrates how geopolitical ambitions and rivalries, if left unchecked, will only bring destruction. Therefore, Sugiono reminded BRICS not to get caught up in the current of rivalry and confrontation. He then touched on the four TNI soldiers who fell in Lebanon. “In Lebanon, four Indonesian peacekeeping troops serving under UNIFIL have fallen in the line of duty, while several others were injured. We honour their sacrifice; we stand with their families; and we call for full accountability. The safety and security of UN peacekeeping forces cannot be compromised,” said Sugiono. According to Sugiono, instability in the Middle East region continues due to unresolved injustices. In that context, he touched on the Palestinian issue.
