Asylum seekers told to go to U.S.
KUPANG: East Timorese citizens who feel insecure or
intimidated in their home country have been advised to seek
political asylum in the United States or Australia, so they will
not burden Indonesia.
"Unless the flow of asylum seekers from East Timor is stopped,
the Indonesian government will have another headache," Carlos
Fatima, vice chairman of the Timor Aswain Union for Human Rights
and Legal Aid, said here on Saturday.
A group of 26 East Timorese recently entered East Nusa
Tenggara seeking asylum, saying they faced intimidation in East
Timor.
The 26 asylum seekers are now staying at the Belu Police
station as the Indonesian and East Timorese governments discuss
their case. --Antara
