Astra's Market Share in Indonesian Car Market Falls Below 50%
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The dominance of PT Astra International Tbk in the national automotive market is beginning to show cracks. Data on domestic car sales up to March 2026 indicates that Astra’s market share has fallen to 47%, well below the psychological 50% threshold that has been relatively maintained for some time.
Throughout the first quarter of 2026, the Astra group’s total sales reached only 101,613 units, lagging behind the total market of 209,021 units. In January, Astra’s market share was still at 52%, but it immediately eroded to 47% in February and remained at the same level in March.
This decline is not merely seasonal fluctuation. Compared to the 2025 trend, Astra’s position has already been under pressure. Even at the end of 2025, its market share once fell to 44% in December—the lowest point in the year.
Astra’s mainstays, such as Toyota and Daihatsu, are not entirely immune. Toyota and Lexus sales dropped from 22,622 units in February 2026 to just 18,021 units in March. Daihatsu experienced an even sharper decline, from 13,452 units to 8,916 units.
On the other hand, pressure is coming from non-Astra brands that are increasingly aggressive. The rising contribution from players outside the Astra group is making the market structure more competitive. Non-Astra sales subtotal even surpassed Astra with 107,408 units in the first quarter.
This situation marks an important shift, namely that the Indonesian automotive market is no longer entirely controlled by one large group.
Cumulatively from January to March 2026, national car sales were recorded at 209,021 units. In the same period, Astra car sales reached 101,613 units.
“In the midst of the Ramadan and Eid momentum throughout March 2026, which impacted the reduction in effective working days, the Astra Group still leads the automotive market share in Indonesia. Going forward, the Astra Group will continue to focus on developing synergistic products and services to meet consumer needs, while contributing to the sustainability of the national automotive industry,” said Head of Corporate Communications Astra, Windy Riswantyo, in her statement on Friday (10/4/2026).
