Astra introduces Pramindo

JAKARTA (JP): The chief commissioner of PT Astra
International, A.R. Ramly, and chairman of France Telecom, Marcel
Roulet, have met with the Governor of North Sumatra Raja Inal
Siregar in Medan to inform him of the start of operations by PT
Pramindo Ikat Nusantara.

Pramindo is one of the five private firms which will install
two million fixed telephone lines throughout the country within
the next three years, except in Jakarta and East Java.

Pramindo, which will install 516,487 fixed telephone lines in
Sumatra by March 1999, is owned by PT Astratel Nusantara, a
subsidiary of Astra, and France Cable et Radio, a subsidiary of
France Telecom, and two other local parties.

Pramindo last week took over the management and operation of
telecommunications networks throughout Sumatra from the state-
owned telecommunications provider PT Telkom.

The management transfer is based on a 15 year joint operation
contract signed last October.

France Telecom has been active in Indonesia since 1981. The
company has also pursued a number of cooperation projects with
Telkom, including high-level manager training. (icn)
