Astra International Appoints Chatib Basri as Commissioner

The Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGMS) of PT Astra International Tbk has decided to appoint Muhamad Chatib Basri as an independent commissioner of the company. Astra’s President Director Rudy stated that Chatib is one of four independent commissioners.

“This doesn’t need further explanation (Chatib Basri’s name); everyone probably already knows,” he said during a press conference at Menara Astra, Jakarta, on Thursday, 23 April 2026.

Chatib Basri previously served as Special Staff to the Minister of Finance (2006-2010), Deputy Minister of Finance for the G20 (2006-2010), and Sherpa to the 6th President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the G20 Summit (November 2008).

He was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the National Economic Committee of the President of Indonesia (2010-2012), Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) in 2012-2013, and Minister of Finance (2013-2014). Subsequently, Chatib was appointed as one of seven members of the National Economic Council on 5 November 2024.

He also served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk since February 2020 and President Commissioner of PT XL Axiata Tbk in the same year. Chatib is also recorded as the owner of the Jakarta-based research consultancy firm CReco Research, and actively serves as a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia.

Basri’s education began at Trisula Elementary School, Jakarta (1973-1979), Kanisius Junior High School, Jakarta (1979-1982), and Kolese Kanisius High School (1982-1985). After graduating high school, he entered the Faculty of Economics at the University of Indonesia and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (1992), followed by a Master of Economic Development (1996), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) from The Australian National University (2001).
