Association: MSMEs require security system support for Personal Data Protection Law implementation

The Indonesian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Association (Akumandiri) believes that business actors need support from data security systems when implementing the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP), particularly for MSMEs operating through marketplaces.

Speaking in Jakarta on Friday, the General Chair of Akumandiri, Hermawati Setyorinny, stated that businesses selling via marketplaces inevitably require consumer data, such as names and addresses, to facilitate transaction and delivery processes.

Therefore, she noted, the implementation of personal data protection cannot rely solely on the prudence of MSME players; it must also be supported by adequate security systems on digital platforms.

“If they are able to access data on marketplaces, then the government also needs to provide strict regulations to ensure whether the databases of each marketplace have been properly checked or not,” she said.

She admitted she could not confirm the specific source of data used in recent fraud cases. However, such experiences have led her to question the security of citizens’ personal data stored within various digital services.

According to her, the government needs to ensure the security of databases on digital platforms, including conducting system testing before they are deployed.

She also assessed that the strengthening of security systems should be accompanied by education for both MSME actors and marketplace companies regarding personal data protection.

She expressed hope that such systemic support and education would help MSMEs fulfil their personal data protection obligations without imposing an excessive burden on their business operations.
