Assistance for transmigrants

JAKARTA (JP): The city administration is providing Rp 500,000
(US$227.27) for each Jakarta family intending to transmigrate to
the outer islands voluntarily.

Haryo K.W., head of the Jakarta office of the Ministry of
Transmigration, told reporters that the fund includes Rp 150,000
to help the transmigrants build a house, Rp 100,000 to assist in
cultivating their fields, Rp 50,000 to process documents for
moving to the new locations and Rp 50,000 to assist in preparing
their belongings for the move.

"The funds will not be handed over directly to the
transmigrants for fear the money will be used for other purposes.
Instead the funds will go to a developer assigned by the city
administration to build their houses," Haryo said.

The provision of the budget is designed mainly to enable the
city administration achieve its goal of encouraging Jakartans to
transmigrate voluntarily to other islands.

"The target for this 1995/1996 fiscal year is set at 200
families," he added. (hhr)
