Assets Worth Rp 101 Trillion Belonging to Former Ruler Seized by State
The government has seized assets worth 760 billion taka, or approximately US$6.2 billion (equivalent to Rp 101 trillion), linked to former Bangladeshi ruler and ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The assets also include property belonging to her family and ten business groups operated by her and her associates.
Citing the New Straits Times on Thursday (16/7/2026), the move is part of an investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering that has been ongoing since Hasina was ousted from power in 2024. The seizure was carried out by the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) after authorities traced the flow of wealth belonging to Hasina and parties suspected of profiting during her 15-year rule.
BFIU chief Ikhtiar Mohammad Mamun said that of the total assets seized, 570 billion taka are located within Bangladesh, while 190 billion taka are held abroad. “We are still working to recover funds suspected of being laundered overseas. We hope to report positive developments by the end of this year,” Mamun said while presenting the agency’s annual report.
Authorities have so far opened 98 cases relating to Sheikh Hasina and individuals or groups suspected of involvement in the case, the report added. Hasina lost power after being overthrown by massive student-led demonstrations in August 2024. She has since fled to India, where she remains.
Following her ouster, Hasina was convicted in absentia in several cases, including one related to corruption in the allocation of land in an elite area of the capital, Dhaka. In a separate case, a Bangladeshi court sentenced Hasina to death for crimes against humanity. Despite this, the former leader has previously stated she plans to return to her country before the end of the year.
The Bangladeshi government is also continuing efforts to repatriate Hasina from India. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the government wants to ensure Hasina returns to face legal proceedings. “The court’s verdict will be carried out. The court will determine whether there is room for an appeal,” he said.
The investigation into Hasina is part of the government’s efforts to crack down on alleged corruption and abuse of power that occurred during her tenure. In addition to the former prime minister, several family members and business groups with close ties to her are also targets of the investigation.
