Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) is urging the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to build prevention mechanisms in the wake of an alleged assault case among fellow police officers at the junior officers’ barracks of the Riau Islands Regional Police (Polda Kepri), which resulted in one victim’s death.

“There is also something important to be considered deeply, especially by police colleagues: the importance of continuous internal supervision efforts and building prevention mechanisms,” said Kompolnas Commissioner Choirul Anam in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Anam, periodic or regular supervision is needed to prevent violations by members.

“This is important to promote more concretely this prevention mechanism. On several occasions, ideas to build prevention mechanisms have already been initiated. However, those ideas indeed need strengthening to be realised,” he said.

Furthermore, he also appreciated the steps taken by Polda Kepri in handling this assault case.

“In particular, the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of Polda Kepri has taken steps to ensure the incident is clarified, including the ongoing punishment process. This is a positive step,” he said.

Polda Kepri has designated a junior officer, Bripda AS, as a suspect in the alleged assault case at the junior officers’ barracks against fellow police officers, which caused one victim to die.

The Head of the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of Polda Kepri, Senior Commissioner Pol. Eddwi Kurniyanto, explained that the incident occurred on Monday night (13/4) around 23:00 WIB at the junior officers’ barracks or dormitory in a rented simple housing complex (rusunawa).

“The victim is a member of the Traffic and Transportation Directorate of Polda Kepri, namely Bripda NS who died, and another victim Bripda JB who is currently undergoing a medical examination,” he said.

According to Eddwi, the incident began when the suspect called the two victims on the grounds of alleged violations for not carrying out kurve (community service) activities.

“The two victims were called to a room in the barracks to be questioned about the kurve. At that time, an assault occurred carried out by their senior,” he said.

From initial examination results, he said, the assault was carried out without using tools, but with bare hands.

In addition, to date, no personal motive has been found between the suspect and the victims.

Besides the criminal process handled by the General Criminal Investigation Directorate, Polda Kepri will also take action through ethical codes via Propam.

“We from Propam will process it through ethical codes, and for the criminal aspect, we have reported it to the Criminal Investigation Directorate,” said Eddwi.
