The perpetrators of the shooting against three civil servants from the Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Office reportedly seized the mobile phone of one of the deceased victims to perform a video call with the victim’s family.

The assailants took the phone belonging to victim Willi Mbuik. The Head of Operations for Damai Cartenz 2026, Inspector General Faizal Ramadhani, confirmed the incident. Meanwhile, a recording of the alleged video call has gone viral on social media.

“Yes, it is true (the perpetrator made a video call to the victim’s family),” said Faizal when contacted on Friday (11/9).

The Head of Public Relations for the Damai Cartenz 2026 Operation, Commissioner Yusuf Sutejo, stated that it is not yet known what the perpetrator said during the video call, as Papua dialect was used.

“It was in Papua dialect; it still needs to be translated,” he said.

In the circulating recording, the family of Willi Mbuik appears to be speaking with an individual with a dark complexion, suspected to be the shooter. At one point, the suspect appeared to smile, while the victim’s family member reminded the perpetrator of divine retribution while questioning the motive behind the shooting.

“What problem did my son have that you killed and shot him?” asked the man speaking to the suspected perpetrator.

Three Civil Servants (ASN) from Jayawijaya Regency were previously reported killed in a shooting by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) on Wednesday (9/9).

The three victims were identified as Aprida Rapi, Head of the Livestock Division of the Jayawijaya Agriculture Office; Alfonsius Albinus Mehan, a veterinarian from the Jayawijaya Health Office; and Willi Mbuik, a prospective civil servant (PNS).

Yusuf stated that the police have identified the characteristics of the shooters. He also noted that police have interrogated the surviving witnesses.

“From our in-depth investigation, examinations have been conducted on the surviving witnesses, and statements were taken at the Jayawijaya Police Station. We have obtained and identified the characteristics of the perpetrators. The team is currently conducting a pursuit,” said Yusuf.

He added that from the processing of the crime scene, officers found several pieces of evidence believed to be related to the shooting.

“We found three shell casings, two of which are 5.56 millimetres, which are ammunition from long-barreled firearms. There was also one 9mm calibre casing, which is ammunition from a short-barreled firearm,” he said.

In addition to the shell casings, officers also discovered blood traces left at the scene.
