Shenzhen (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Funiture and Handicraft Industries Association (Asmindo) is optimistic Indonesia will achieve its target of earning three billion US dollars from furniture and handicraft product exports in 2008 despite strong competition from other countries.

"We are optimistic the target of three billlion US dollars for 2008 will be reached with the support of all relevant parties in the government and business community," Asmindo Chairman Ambar Tjahyono said here on Saturday.

Tjahyono who is in Shenzhen to attend the 22nd Shenzhen International Furniture Exhibition (SIFE) together with 40 other Indonesian businessmen, said the export target for 2008 was higher than for 2007 when the figure was 2.8 billion US dollars.

In order to boost the country`s furniture and handiraft product exports, Asmindo would among other things take an active part in a number of trade exhibitions to be held in different parts of the world.

Indonesian furniture and handicraft products were already known in many countries in different continents such as Europe, America, Asia and Africa, he said.

He admitted achieving the 2008 target would not be an easy task as competition with other furniture and handicraft exporting countries was getting tighter all the time but Asmindo would try to enhance its competitive edge by producing goods in specifically Indonesian styles and ethnic designs which always prove to be in great demand among overseas consumers.

Tjahyono said during the Shenzhen International Furniture Exhibition from March 19-22, the Chinese public showed great interest in furniture and handicraft products from Indonesia. A number of the Indonesian exhibits were sold in bulk and on long-term contracts.

He said he was optimistic the 2008 export target would be achieved also because Asmindo`s efforts had the full suport of the government and its diplomatic missions in a number of countries which had provided certain facilities for promotional actvity.

At present, furniture and handicraft product industries in Indonesia were employing some 12 million people, Tjahyono said. (*)
