State-owned insurer PT Asuransi Kredit Indonesia (Askrindo) is strengthening its commitment to coastal communities by expanding insurance access for fishers in Sorong, Southwest Papua. The move was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Syahbandar of the Sorong Coastal Fisheries Port (PPP). The agreement was signed by Askrindo Sorong Branch Manager Dian Herdiana and PPP Sorong Syahbandar Sugiarto, witnessed by representatives from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, port officials, and fisher group representatives. Askrindo Business Director Budhi Novianto stated that the collaboration is a strategic step to match the sector’s significant potential with stronger risk mitigation. “Seeing the continuously developing fisheries potential in Sorong, we view the need for more comprehensive risk mitigation for fishing communities. Through this collaboration, Askrindo is present to support that need by expanding access to relevant and affordable insurance, so fishers can work more calmly, productively, and have better economic resilience,” Budhi said. This aligns with the strengthening economic growth trend in Southwest Papua. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the region’s economy grew by 4.03% year-on-year in 2025, with a Gross Regional Domestic Product reaching IDR 39.2 trillion, supported by real sectors including agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. In coastal areas like Sorong, fisheries are a primary economic driver, reflected by the activity of 749 vessels landing 3.57 million kilograms of fish with a production value exceeding IDR 86.2 billion in 2025. The partnership builds on previous socialisation programmes introducing solutions such as Personal Accident cover, ASMIK Bahari for vessels, ASMIK Usahaku for micro-enterprises, and ASMIK Rumahku for homes. The approach focuses not only on product availability but also on strengthening community understanding of risk management. Future implementation will concentrate on expanding financial literacy, reinforcing assistance for fisher groups, and fostering sustainable synergy with stakeholders in the marine and fisheries sector.
