Asked About Running Again for PSSI Chairman, Here's What Erick Thohir Said

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir has opened the door to running for re-election, but stated the decision will depend on consultations with the government, FIFA, and the support of the Indonesian football community. He made the remarks following the PSSI Ordinary Congress in Jakarta on Monday (3/8/2026). Thohir’s current term expires in 2027, when the federation will hold an elective congress to choose new leadership. He said he is not in a position of wanting or not wanting to return, emphasising that the most important factor is securing the best person to continue developing Indonesian football. ‘I will certainly discuss it first with the government and also with FIFA. And of course, the football community will vote. So we are not in a position of wanting or not wanting. Whoever is best for Indonesian football,’ Erick said. During the congress, participants also unanimously agreed to reschedule the 2027 PSSI Elective Congress. Originally slated for May 2027 under the 2025 PSSI Statutes, the election will now be held in July 2027. Erick explained the adjustment allows time for organisational consolidation following the provincial PSSI elections scheduled for October and November this year, and aligns with the conclusion of the national league competition in June 2027. The move is intended to make the election process more effective, transparent, and compliant with regulations.
