Asian share prices close mixed
TOKYO (AFP): Japanese share prices closed 1.6 percent lower
yesterday while other Asian bourses were mixed, most moving in
line with domestic news.
In Tokyo, the overall market was pressured by futures-led
selling together with foreign and retail investor sales, brokers
said.
The Nikkei stock average of the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped
332.59 points to finish the session at 20,744.88 while the
broader Topix index of all shares on the first section closed
17.07 points lower at 1,584.81.
In Hong Kong, share prices rose 0.6 percent on buying of
shares in HSBC Holdings plc following strong interim profit
results, dealers said.
The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong's key Hang Seng Index gained
63.17 points to finish at 11,134.60.
In Singapore, blue-chip share prices closed 0.8 percent lower
as profit-taking and the absence of institutional buying interest
applied the brakes on a four-day rebound.
The Straits Times Industrials index of leading shares on the
Stock Exchange of Singapore fell 17.36 points to 2,129.36. The
broader All-Singapore index fell 3.30 points to 538.40.
In Kuala Lumpur, shares tumbled 1.2 percent, weighed down by
selling of Tenaga Nasional Bhd. spurred by Saturday's 16-hour
national power outage, brokers said.
The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange's 100-share weighted composite
index fell 12.77 points to 1,093.52.
In Seoul, the composite price index rose 3.75 points to finish
at 828.05.
In Manila, the Philippine Stock Exchange index fell 32.46
points to 3,121.52.
In Bangkok, the broad-based Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)
index fell 11.96 points to close at 1,125.48 points. The selected
SET 50 index lost 1.09 points to finish at 85.66 points.
In Sydney, the Australian Stock Exchange's main indicator, the
all ordinaries index, dropped 10.8 points to 2,222.9.
In Taipei, the Taiwan Stock Exchange weighted price index rose
183.32 points to 6,266. 98.
The Financial Times-Stock Exchange index of 100 leading
British shares was down 4.8 points at 3,783.5.
Frankfurt's 30-share DAX index was up 1.27 at 2,522.20.
In Paris, the CAC-40 index was 17.54 lower at 1,995.65.
