Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — Asia-Pacific stock markets opened weaker in trading on Monday (3/8/2026), as market participants monitored the latest developments surrounding geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Citing CNBC.com, investor sentiment remained overshadowed by uncertainty even though de-escalation signals emerged following statements by United States (US) President Donald Trump regarding Iran.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index fell 1.43% at the start of trading, whilst the Topix index corrected 1.45%. The weakness reflected investors’ cautious stance towards global market prospects amid geopolitical dynamics.

In South Korea, the Kospi index plummeted 4.57% at the opening of trade. Meanwhile, the small-cap Kosdaq index also weakened by 1.67%.

In Australia, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.36% at the start of the trading session. The decline came as investors reduced exposure to risky assets amid growing market uncertainty.

Market sentiment was also influenced by statements from US President Donald Trump on Sunday local time, saying that plans for an attack on Iran had been cancelled. The decision was taken after Tehran and several neighbouring countries requested that the strike be postponed.

Trump also said the deal would include the immediate, full and comprehensive opening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the end of Iran’s nuclear threat. The statement raised hopes of easing tensions in a region that has long served as a vital route for global energy trade.
