Asian Giant Set to Intervene in Strait of Hormuz, Deploying Troops

The South Korean government is reportedly preparing to deploy its military assets to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This deployment of military forces is targeted to take place before the end of this year.

Quoting Reuters on Friday (4/9/2026), the South Korean government is currently preparing various procedures to seek parliamentary approval regarding the military deployment. This process includes submitting a motion for approval to parliament this month following a cabinet-level review.

Several South Korean media outlets have reported that the government is considering several deployment options. These options include the dispatch of maritime patrol aircraft, logistics support ships, and sea mine detection and clearance units.

The South Korean government has also discussed the scale and nature of this potential contribution with allied nations, including the United States, the United/United Kingdom, and France.

Responding to the widespread reports, the South Korean Presidential Palace (Blue House) immediately provided clarification. The palace confirmed that Seoul has indeed discussed various practical ways to contribute to freedom of navigation in the strategic strait.

“Reports stating that the government has approved the deployment are different from the facts,” the palace stated firmly.
