Asia-Pacific urged to uphold cooperation amid tensions
Speaking at the opening of the 82nd session of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok on Monday, Hari said the region must remain forward-looking despite global uncertainty.
“The Asia-Pacific must lead by example. Let us not be distracted by rivalries; we must continue to be guided by cooperation for mutual progress,” he said, as broadcast by UN Web TV.
He stressed that the Asia-Pacific should serve as a model for international collaboration, with UNESCAP acting as a bridge to build trust through tangible, inclusive outcomes, particularly for vulnerable communities.
Hari said the region’s resilience has been driven by forward-looking development policies, including progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals under the 2030 Agenda, alongside innovation across multiple sectors.
“We are proactive in embracing new sources of growth, including digital transformation, the green and blue economy, as well as financial inclusion,” he added.
Given its leadership role, he urged member states to ensure the Asia-Pacific becomes not only a global growth engine but also a “compass” guiding international cooperation.
Hari emphasized UNESCAP’s strategic role in shaping development priorities and advancing the 2030 Agenda, noting that member states share responsibility for achieving these goals.
“We must work hard for the dignity of every human being, including through economic and social progress,” he said.
Held from April 20 to 24, 2026, at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, the session brings together ministers and stakeholders from across the region to discuss solutions for sustainable development.
Under the theme “Leaving no one behind: advancing a society for all ages in Asia and the Pacific,” the forum addresses demographic trends, decent work, inclusive employment, healthy ageing, women’s economic empowerment, and social integration.
More than 477 participants from 58 member states are attending the session, jointly organized by UNESCAP, Azerbaijan, and Thailand.
