ASEAN Supports Local SMEs in Breaking into Global Markets
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) supports enhancing the participation of local micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to enable them to penetrate global markets and strengthen regional economic competitiveness.
Based on a press release from ASEAN Philippines 2026 accessed in Jakarta on Thursday, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry (DTI) Allan Gepty highlighted ASEAN’s economic goals to keep trade flowing amid the Middle East crisis.
“ASEAN is an economic community positioned not only as a market but also as a production hub,” he said.
He explained that one of ASEAN’s key trade agendas is inclusivity, which includes integrating MSMEs into global value chains.
“One way is by providing them with better market access in this region,” he stated.
“Integration in the region (ASEAN) is not limited to goods trade. You can leverage the liberalisation we have implemented in the services sector. It is also important to encourage more investment as it can create jobs and business opportunities,” he added.
Under the Philippines’ chairmanship, one of the Economic Outcome Priorities is the establishment of the ASEAN Centre of Excellence for MSMEs, aimed at integrating all programmes, projects, and initiatives related to MSMEs in the region.
Allan stated that MSMEs are the heart of the ASEAN market, which will enhance regional collaboration to continue empowering MSMEs for integration into global markets.
Additionally, the Philippines is pushing for the completion and signing of the Digital Economy Framework Agreement and the establishment of a framework for regional payment interconnectivity.
“Online platforms are one of the equalisers for our MSMEs to access foreign markets. And I think creating rules that will govern online transactions will be very welcome, including regional payment interconnectivity initiatives,” he said.
