Cebu may not have produced major breakthroughs, but it at least demonstrated one increasingly clear direction: as the world becomes more uncertain, ASEAN needs strong leadership, and Indonesia wants to ensure it remains at the forefront.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Amid rising global uncertainty, Southeast Asian leaders gathered in Cebu, Philippines, for the 48th ASEAN Summit.

Cebu was chosen not merely as the host location, but also due to its long history as a centre of trade and an important gateway to the Philippines since pre-colonial times.

For a long time, Cebu has been known as a meeting point for trade, culture, and international relations in Southeast Asia. The selection of this city also serves as a reminder of its strategic role in ASEAN’s journey.

This ASEAN Summit took place amid geopolitical and economic pressures looming over the region, from the impact of the US-Iran war on global supply chains, energy and food security issues, to competition among major world powers affecting regional stability.

Such a situation once again places ASEAN in an important position to strengthen cooperation and maintain solidarity among member states. Amid the challenges faced by each country, this forum becomes a space to unite steps in facing global uncertainty together.

The meeting in Cebu also recalled an important moment two decades ago, when regional leaders gathered in this city to formulate the foundation for strengthening ASEAN’s institutions through the Cebu Declaration, which later became the basis for the birth of the ASEAN Charter in 2007.

The theme put forward by the Philippines for the 2026 ASEAN Summit, “Navigating Our Future, Together”, also depicts the region’s efforts to maintain unity amid diversity.

That theme emphasises that ASEAN’s strength lies in togetherness to build a peaceful, prosperous, and people-centred future.

The theme also reflects ASEAN’s vision that is more open to innovation, able to leverage the region’s diversity, and ready to face current and future challenges.

Overall, the logo and theme of ASEAN 2026 become a symbol of an invitation for Southeast Asian countries to move together towards a peaceful and prosperous region.

In addition to the Philippines, ASEAN currently consists of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, as well as Timor Leste, which officially became the 11th member last October.

For Indonesia, the hosting of this summit also becomes an important momentum to strengthen its position and regional diplomacy amid increasingly complex global dynamics.

The presence of President Prabowo Subianto through “black peci diplomacy” reflects Indonesia’s commitment to continue maintaining its strategic role as one of the main pillars of ASEAN in promoting regional stability and cooperation.
