ASEAN Secretariat holds arts expo

JAKARTA (JP): An exhibition featuring the region's arts and
culture at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jl. Sisingamangaraja, South
Jakarta opened on Monday.

ASEANA: a showcase of ASEAN Cultures presents the published
works of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information: books,
video and audio tapes, paintings, photographs and handicrafts
from ASEAN countries.

The exhibition, which will be officially opened by Minister of
Tourism, Arts and Culture Marzuki Usman next Tuesday, runs
through July 25.

During the one-month show related events will be staged in
conjunction with it. In the ASEAN bazaar of food and handicrafts
on June 27, women's associations from the nine ASEAN embassies
will present food from their countries and sell traditional
handicrafts.

On the same day, a children's drawing contest will also be
organized.

Art critic Jim Supangkat is scheduled to deliver a lecture on
ASEAN Modern Art on July 1.

An exhibition of pictures and poems about the Kalimantan fires
will be held from June 15 to July 3.

Also due to be displayed is an exhibition of the winning
entries in the ASEAN Art Awards 1994/1997. This is planned for
July 7 through July 25.
