ASEAN-Russia Summit could boost investment, says expert
International Relations observer from the University of Indonesia, Muhammad Syaroni Rofii, assesses that Russia can contribute investment and tourist visits to several ASEAN countries, including Indonesia. The ASEAN-Russia Summit took place on 17–19 June in Kazan, Russia, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia partnership. “Looking at the Kazan Declaration 2026, there is a clear commitment to focus on strengthening cooperation in the economy, energy, technology and safeguarding global stability. Russia can also contribute to maintaining energy supply amid ongoing global energy price fluctuations,” Syaroni said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Friday. He stated that the ASEAN-Russia Summit has significant influence for Indonesia’s interests, both short and long term, given that Russia is a major power in international politics with advantages in economy and technology. According to Syaroni, Indonesia also needs to enhance cooperation in the technology and science sectors with Russia. “We know Russia has advantages in agricultural technology, health and energy. Considering Indonesia is aggressively strengthening its energy and food security ecosystems, I think Indonesia can rely on Russia,” he said. He added that Russia is a member of the UN Security Council, thus holding an important position in shaping the global political configuration. “One of the factors for international stability is Russia, and it is hoped that Russia’s role can benefit ASEAN,” he stated. Furthermore, he conveyed that Russia’s role is important as a balancer amid rising tensions in the South China Sea and Indo-Pacific region. “The Kazan Declaration 2026 also confirms Russia’s commitment to supporting a stable ASEAN and upholding UNCLOS and applicable international norms,” he said. Indonesia’s presence at the ASEAN-Russia Summit was represented by Foreign Minister Sugiono, who attended as head of delegation representing President Prabowo Subianto.
