ASEAN rail link studied
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): A consortium of three Malaysian companies will study the viability of the first route of a railway linking Singapore and Kunming in China, local newspapers yesterday quoted Transport Minister Ling Liong Sik as saying.
Ling said that Renong Bhd., the DRB-Hicom group, and Bolton Properties Bhd. would study the first route of the Trans-Asia Railway, construction of which is expected to start in 1998.
Ling said the project to link the mainland members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would cost around 1.5 billion ringgit (US$446 million).
The route will be from Singapore, via Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Ho Chih Minh City and Hanoi, ending in Kunming.
