ASEAN police meet in Myanmar
YANGON (AP): Southeast Asian police chiefs began a two-day
conference in Myanmar on Monday focused on increasing cooperation
against transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, the flesh
trade and cybercrime.
"The problem of the 21st century is organized crimes committed
across national boundaries," Myanmar's home minister Col. Tin
Hlaing said in his opening address at 20th annual gathering of
police chiefs from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN).
He warned of "dire consequences on the political, economic and
social situations of nations" posed by crimes like drug
trafficking, arms and human smuggling, black marketeering of
nuclear technology, cybercrimes, piracy, money laundering and
corruption.
The police chiefs from all 10 ASEAN member states are
attending the conference held at a downtown Yangon hotel.
