ASEAN officials to meet in RP

MANILA (DPA): Senior defense and foreign affairs officials
will gather in Manila today for a three-day meeting on enhancing
regional security cooperation among the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Manila is hosting the ASEAN Regional Forum after Southeast
Asian foreign ministers made little progress last week in New
York on a cease-fire in troubled Cambodia.

Sources at the Philippine foreign office said defense
cooperation and confidence-building measures among the nine ASEAN
countries will be discussed.

Joint economic cooperation in the Spratly Islands and security
issues are on the agenda, they added.
