ASEAN official in Myanmar

YANGON (Reuters): ASEAN secretary-general Rodolfo Severino Jr. arrived in the Myanmar capital of Yangon yesterday for a three- day visit, foreign ministry sources said.

Severino, who took up the post in January, will meet senior officials of the ruling military State Peace and Development Council during the visit, they said without giving details.

"He will meet Myanmar leaders and is scheduled to go upcountry during his three-day visit here," one source said.

Myanmar became a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) last July. ASEAN also groups Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Laos.
