ASEAN mulls extradition treaty

JAKARTA: Southeast Asian countries are considering signing an extradition treaty, a move expected to help solve transnational crime.

Justice and human rights minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra revealed on Thursday that his counterparts in Southeast Asian countries had signed a communique on the matter.

According to Yusril, each country should have a bilateral agreement with the others so that they could define the crimes included in the agreement.

The minister added the government would also sign an agreement with China, especially to trace the whereabouts of fugitive Eddy Tansil.

"The problem is that the Chinese government has no idea of Eddy Tansil's whereabouts," Yusril said after a meeting with visiting China's deputy attorney general. -- Antara
