KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad called yesterday for the establishment of an ASEAN framework on electronic commerce amid the dawn of the digital marketplace.
"An ASEAN framework on electronic commerce may provide the platform for a collective vision of the emerging digital marketplace," Mahathir told an international conference on electronic communities in Asia.
"This framework will also provide the basis for discussions to facilitate the development of an ASEAN position to catalyze the growth of electronic commerce," he said.
Mahathir had Thursday met with corporate leaders from several information technology giants to discuss the country's ambitious multimedia super corridor (MSC) project.
Among those present were Acer Inc. chairman Stan Shih, Ericsson president Lars Ramqvist, Motorola Inc. chief executive Gary Tooker, NEC Corp. chairman Tadahiro Sekimoto, Alcatel Alsthom chairman Serge Tchuruk and Silicon Graphics chairman Bob Bishop.
